The practice will not be as muscular as it seems. Like Martial arts, an advanced Ashtanga practice will depend on enhanced coordination and "running energy" to some extent. The power of the practice will eventually come from the energetic level.

Nicki Doane is the REAL DEAL! Forget MODELS doing yoga- Nicki is a professional trained yogi and her ashtanga yoga is a wicked workout! Lots of heat released and my back and arms are stronger since I started. Also, the streched hamstrings have also helped my back and neck.

I love it how the two ancient civilisations of Asia, China and India, both produced exercise systems of co-ordinated movement and breath, qigong and yoga. Fascinating. I've been practising qigong since I was 9, and many practises are similar to yoga, with less emphasis on the stretching typical of many yoga systems.

Yes, Krishnamacharya and Jois developed the Ashtanga series from the old texts. They did a lot of adapting. Krishnamacharya, along with Jois and Krishnamacharya's brother-in -law B.K.S. Iyengar, have been influential on modern day hatha yoga.

Do you realize who Pattabhi Jois is? He studied with Krishnamacharya (please check out that clip) who revitalized the Hatha yoga tradition in the early 1900's. Pattabhi Jois studied under him and created the Ashtanga series (please correct me if I am wrong). If YOU do yoga...it is because of men like Pattabhi Jois!!!

It's a good point that you brought up, but Ashtanga has to be explained somehow, right? The whole system of Ashtanga is more than just the asanas. It includes breathing and meditating as well. Besides, Pattabhi Jois is over 90 years old, and he doesn't do the asanas like he used to. He did his practice for decades, so you would think he could use the rest. But he still practices pranayama breathing.

It may be from the Primary Series DVD but it's not the Primary Series. They are Sun Salutations, cosmokrama is totally correct - Primary(or whichever) Series begins after these and the standing postures.

It really concerns me that people might be learning Surya A off of this clip... This is really poor instruction for anyone with any restriction, injury , or any beginner who doesn't already know whatthey're doing. Jumping back to plank is a terrible idea which puts tons of strain on the wrists, shoulders, and elbows. _Much_ better to step back to a low plank. you'll get stronger that way too!!

This is a really good explanation of the first sun salutation but it's not the Primary Series. The dude says it himself that the sun salutation is the foundation of all the series in ashtanga yoga. The primary series is a sequence of poses that is practiced after the sun salutations and the fundamental poses.
