This is from the same 1938 newsreel that shows Krishnamacharya demonstrating yoga. Here we see a young Iyengar (still alive, well, and doing yoga, BTW) doing advanced poses that constitute the advanced A & B astanga series. This is obviously well before Iyengar dropped the vinyasa aspect from his practice and rebranded it as "Iyengar Yoga", putting greater emphasis on allignment.

Well put santtiagofortes. I would add that more important than the asanas, as sincere students of life is to observe with love our own motives and behaviors. This in my opinion can bring us much closer to the spirit of yoga than the most perfectly performed or advanced posture. All the best.

Yoga was always taught from guru to worthy disciple. Now people like Iyenga take bits and pieces of the tradition and useing it for their own purposes. What you end up with is a piecemeal approach where people think they are doing yoga. People may feel that they are getting some benifit but for me, it is not yoga.

This video makes me trust Iyengar even more. Some of the people who espouse "yoga is not about the physical" seem to do so because they lack the physical discipline to master the poses. But with Iyengar clearly has been there and done that, and can speak with authority about their role in "the cessation of the fluxuation of the mind" and moving beyond the physical. Believe me, when this guy talks yoga, I will listen!

Iyengar or even the most seasoned ashtanga practioners will freely tell you that asana is only one of the eight limbs of yoga. Igengar teaches asana, 3rd limb, right along side the yamas and niyamas (limbs 1 & 2). --People have to start where they are. For many the physical practice is the most accessible place. What is wrong with that? At least they are starting. If this leads them to continue to walk down the yogic path, and learn about the other aspects of yoga, then great.

The asanas is a very small but important part of traditional yoga. B.K.S. Iyengar and his followers have a very physical approach and for me miss the whole point of yoga. This of course is just one man's opinion. May I remind you that 100 years is not even a single heart beat in the long history of yoga.

I know this man personally, He is very very humble and down to earth. You will be astounded to see how humble he is. One of the most basic requirement of any yogi is to let go of pride. It is necessary to set a standard of how long and good the pranayama has to be. As a guru he is teaching his students of what a proper pranayama is. The microphone amplifies his breathing so he doesn't have to use much force, making it easier to breathe out in a lengthier manner. I just tried it and timed 42 seconds That's 5 seconds less than him. I am not a yogi. So what does this man think he's proving? Now he starts inhaling at 2:05 stops at 2:38 that's 43 seconds I exhaled for 45 seconds 2 seconds more than him Notice how he gets graduallycloser to the mic!

Maybe I am a little late in your discussion, but I disagree with you. Though Mr. Iyengar´s example of the poses is the ideal, we Iyengar teachers are absolutely aware that every person has his or her own starting point and the poses need to be modified for that person. That is the point with the props we use: To get the correct alignement no matter how flexible we are. And for the difficulty of asanas: I´d much rather do a perfect Dandasana than a crippled Rajakapotasana...

Yoga was not sent here from another dimension. No matter how far back in time it was started, it's man-made, thus apparently 'superficial'; in your estimation. (Actually, Gurdieff did believe that the all yoga is artificial and a negative influence on man's well-being!) I suggest taking what we need and leaving the rest. The body is as real as any other illusion, and so, must be trained along with the mind to allow personal evolution.

Another problem with Iyengar "yoga" is its strict rules system - as if people were for yoga and not yoga for people. As if every man or woman has necessarily the same anatomy as Mr.Iyengar and his instructors. Difficulty of asana is considered as a measurement of success or achievement ... I know. But this kind of supergymnastics (with the following "Ashtanga Yoga" "Power Yoga" "Bikram Yoga" etc. are just modern commercial and highly superficial inventions. Look at the real yoga sources: Hatha-Yoga Pradipika, Gheranda Samhita, Shiva Samhita, Patanjali Yoga Sutras - and although these are various approaches, you can find there what yoga has been really about since the time immemorial

i'm not an iyengar devotee but having practiced a few different types of yoga, i think his style engages the body and mind on all levels. from my experience it felt like it could lead to a deep understanding of the body through precise attention to each movement versus following a routine without really linking the intellect with the bodily practice.

the fact that people are focusing on the size of his belly and deeming it unattractive only means they have a limited understanding of yoga and it's purposes. one of the reasons his chest, because it's not really his belly but his entire upper body including his back, is so large is because of pranayama. he has a whole book on the subject entitled "light on pranayama". also, a strong body does not necessarily mean a thin or muscular body.

yoga is not necessarily supposed to give you a body which is based on a particular ideal of beauty. the man is 73 years old and is holding those poses with calm attention and without strain and mostlikely meditating in each pose. yes, yoga is to be used in unison with sitting meditation but it's supposed to quiet the mind while connecting to the body in order to focus during sitting meditation.

So is this pretzle-man different than the chinese acrobats who can bend themselves into even more twisted and more powerful and complicated positions? It has nothing to do with spiritual development! It's only the "asana" (postures) stage of ashtanga yoga and is frozen in the Hatha Yoga phase which every good yogi knows is the second phase of 8 levels. Just a bunch of followers who have no faith in themselves and in turn worship this pretzle-head.

thanks :) i had been given the video when i was living in mysore and was told otherwise, this helps clear the dilemma. it did direct me to find out about BNS Iyengar who lives and teaches in mysore, and was also a student of Krishnamacharya. thank you :)

I don't think the exercises are weird. These are advanced postures from an experienced yogi. The deeper you go into the stretching, the more you increase your flexibility, so this degree of flexibility is a natural rather than unnatural result. But yes, not necessary for yoga. A woman paralyzed can still achieve enlightenment. There is more than one path to reach the goals of yoga.

I'm not sure I understand you here; if you are saying the spiritual aspects of yoga are more important than the physical aspects, I agree with you. But it is good to purify and discipline the body in the pursuit of spiritual development. I don't think this is about showing off, more demonstrating what a fit instrument the body can become, also simply demonstrating how to perform the postures. Physical practice is just one branch on the tree of yoga, but it is a valuable part.

I have been a student of yoga for ten years and all aspects of my physical practice have had nothing but a positive impact on my body, my health and my life. To say that these postures are damaging to the body is like saying that pushing the boundaries of the mind is damaging to the mind. It can be if done wrong, but if done correctly, pushing the boundaries of body and mind are needed for spiritual development. I have read his introduction to his book Light on Yoga and I don't sense a fraud here. This man has been practicing what he preaches for longer than most of us have been walking this planet. I am an Indian by origin. Most of these Indian spiritual gurus are frauds. The ones who attract westerners and make money are 110% frauds. Yoga is good for flexibilty but it ends there. The advanced yoga postures are extremely dangerous and have driven a few people insane. This may explain why BKS looks edgy. Basic yoga is good for flexibilty but doing the headstand is a very bad idea as it interfers with the body's natural harmony and balance.

I am an Indian. His style of speaking is Indian, emotionally honest, direct and simple in delivery. His behavioural style is almost a dance- emotionally evocative, alive. We Indians honour such behaviour and speech. The West honours a style of speaking that has political finesse, pokerfaced and is "sophisticated?!". I have great respect and admiration for Mr Iyengar and his monumental contribution to Yoga. I'm surprised however how tetchy, argumentative, and even - dare I say it - nervously arrogant he appears in this video clip. He does not seem, at least superficially, to have the quiet peace in his body manner or in his style of verbal exchange that I might have expected from one who devotes his life to Yoga.

In any case, the foundation of Iyengar Yoga, the reason why it is different from the other schools of yoga (at least at the beginner's level) is because you can be of any shape or size and still practice the poses because it invented the use props which can help support the body for different postures if your body finds it difficult to perform the pose. So your body does not always have to be able to "bend in a certain way" as you so aptly put it.
